Tips for trades businesses
  • Trade and town first, business name at the end: that is how people search.
  • Emergency service, master business or service area belong in the first sentence of the description.
  • Every service page needs its own title, not “Home” everywhere.
  • End with a clear call to action, such as “Request a quote” or “Call now”.

Before anyone dials your number, they read two lines: the page title and the description. Check here whether your trade, your town and your strongest selling point are shown in full or cut off mid-word.

Why width matters, not the number of characters

Google cuts off titles where the space runs out, and that space is measured in pixels. An “M” takes up almost three times as much room as an “l”. A title like “Master Painter Mühlviertel” is therefore much wider than a title of the same length made of narrow letters. This tool measures your text in the font Google uses and shows where it will be shortened.

Titles and descriptions for trades businesses

People search by trade and place: “electrician Linz”, “roofer Rosenheim”, “tiler Cologne”. Exactly those words belong at the start of the title, your business name at the end. Every important service deserves its own page with its own title: “Solar PV in and around Linz” brings in different enquiries from “Electrical installation for new builds”.

The description is where you say what sets you apart: master business, emergency service, the area you cover, how quickly you come out for a site visit. End with a clear call to action, such as “Book a site measurement now”. Google does not always use your description, but a good one greatly improves the odds.

Quick answers

Questions on this topic

Does Google show my title exactly as I wrote it?

In most cases, yes. But Google can rewrite titles and descriptions if they do not match the search or are identical across many pages. An honest, individual text for each page, with trade and place, is most often shown just as you wrote it.

Where do I set the title and description?

In your website's page settings, usually under “SEO” or “Search engines”: the field for the page title is often called “Title”, the second one “Meta description”. On the websites we build, we maintain both for every page and every language.

How long can the description be?

Around 120 to 155 characters is a good guide. Because mobile results are cut off earlier, put the most important point in the first sentence: your service, your area and whether you offer an emergency service.
